Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 – What to expect

The Mercedes SLK 55 AMG, as we know it, is the epitome of small performance roadsters. Mercedes though is about to replace it with their upcoming offering called the SLC 43. The latter introduces the first ever ’43’ nomenclature for the Indian market. This new model designation, however, isn’t the only big change here. The SLC 43 has even had a monumental change of heart.

Here’s what you can expect from this all-new roadster that will come as one of 12 new car launches this year by Mercedes-Benz India.

Family look

As one would expect, the SLC 43 wears the new-age Mercedes look complete with a curved rectangular diamond grille and a gaping front bumper. It maintains the classic roadster profile with its minimal front and rear overhangs and a long bonnet. As for the rear, the SLC looks more or less the same as the old SLK 55.

Downsized engine

Whereas the outgoing SLK 55 gets a fire-breathing 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, the SLC 43 gets a relatively modest 3-litre V6 bi-turbo engine. That said, this downsized unit is a fairly powerful unit with 361bhp of power and 500Nm of torque. Paired to a new 9-speed automatic gearbox, the V6 allows the SLC to accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 4.7 seconds. The top-speed, meanwhile, is electronically restricted to 250kmph.

Grand features

The SLC may be a thrill machine but Mercedes hasn’t skimped on features at all. Globally, the car can be fitted with plenty of features including intelligent LED headlights, several 18-inch alloy/tyre combinations, leather upholstery, COMAND infotainment and communication system, a Harman Kardon surround sound system as well as ambience lighting in solar red, polar blue or polar white.

More accessible power

The old SLK 55 delivered all of its 540Nm of torque at a rather high 4,500rpm. The SLC, on the other hand, pumps out 520Nm from just 2,000rpm onwards, thanks to the turbos. What this means is that there’s plenty of punch at pretty much all engine speeds.

Competition

The Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 is expected to cost upwards of Rs 75 lakh and will compete with the BMW Z4 and the upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster as its prime rivals.
