Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh lives to fight another day

Himachal CM Virbhadra

A day after the CBI and ED officials raided Virbhadra Singh’s properties in Shimla and New Delhi, opposition BJP and CPIM demanded his resignation on moral grounds, the BJP leaders accused the Congress of shielding the corrupt leaders and also demanded re-elections in the state.

“The chief minister should immediately step-down as the allegations being faced by him and his family members are of very serious nature. The Congress has lost all morals and also people’s support. They cannot run the government in the state. The party is shielding the corrupt leaders which the people of the state will never tolerate,” Dr Rajiv Bindal, general secretary, BJP, said.

The CPI (Marxist) also demanded Virbhadra’s resignation and accused BJP and Congress of misusing central investigating agencies like ED and CBI.

“Virbhadra Singh should immediately step down as the chief minister till he comes clear on the allegations. He can be re-inducted as a chief minister after the cases against him cleared,” CPI (M) General Secretary, Rakesh Singha said.

Meanwhile, the Congress on Sunday said that Virbhadra Singh will not step down as the cases registered against him are politically motivated. The party also accused the NDA of misusing the CBI to destabilise the government in the state.

“Why should he step down? The matter is sub-judice as the cases are pending in courts and he has not been proved guilty so far. All this is being done to destablise the state government at the behest of BJP leaders,” Himachal Congress President, Sukhwinder Singh said.

The Congress leaders continued to express their solidarity with the Virbhadra Singh who is facing a case for housing disproportionate assets.

Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Capt Amarinder Singh on Sunday condemned the CBI raids at the residence of Virbhadra Singh on the day (Saturday) of his daughter’s wedding.

Captain Amarinder said, “It shows the extreme extent of vindictiveness and political vendetta indulged in by the current NDA regime against its political opponents.” “Heavens would not have fallen had the CBI waited for a few days if at all it really needed to conduct raids on the various premises and places related to Vibhadra Singh,” the former Punjab chief minister remarked, adding that it was a shameful and scornful act done at the behest of the political rivals of the HP CM.

“Legal and political battles should be fought legally and politically and not with vengeance to the extent of trying to disrupt as important a function as the wedding of one’s daughter,” Amarinder said.

The Congress Legislature Party in its meeting held in Shimla on Sunday passed a resolution for submitting a memorandum to the President of India, highlighting the political vendetta unleashed by the central BJP leadership on behalf and at the instance of State BJP leaders for destabilising the popular Congress elected Government in the state.

Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Arun Jaitley had also written to the then prime minister Manmohan Singh and the CBI, levelling serious corruption charges including the alleged payoff from a private steel firm against Virbhadra Singh.

Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who had moved two cases in a Delhi court had alleged that Singh’s income tax returns and affidavits filed at the time of nomination by him and his wife link him to dubious transactions and investments worth crores when he was a Union minister.
