The quest to rescue princess Sita is coming to an end as Rama and his army of monkeys make their final push for victory against the demon king Ravana of Lanka. In the ensuing battle, Rama defeats and disarms Ravana but magnanimously spares his life.

It revolves around the leader of the monkey army, Hanuman locking horns with Ravana’s brother, the sorcerer, Mahiravana, in order to save the lives of Rama and Lakshmana.

Review: Indian mythology, including the epic Ramayana, is a reservoir of great stories. One such story revolves around how Rama refuses to kill Ravana in the battlefield, as the latter is rendered defenseless. The two warring sides decide to meet the next day and resume the battle. However, Ravana decides to take advantage of the situation and asks his sorcerer brother, Mahiravana for help. Mahiravana tricks Hanuman who is guarding the cave that houses Rama and Lakshmana for the night and kidnaps them. That’s when Hanuman embarks on a journey to kill Mahiravana and rescue the two.

This 3D animation film plays out like an Amar Chitra Katha fable as a battle between good versus evil. Right from the beginning, it is understood that Hanuman will emerge victorious. Characters are clearly black or white and there are no shades of grey. The screenplay is gripping but the animation is amateurish in some portions. Animated films in the West have set a very high standard. When adults and children go to the theatres to watch an animation film, they expect nothing less than an engaging and vivid experience. In this case, it only happens occasionally. It’s easy even for the casual viewer to notice that the animated figures don’t always look proportional. Occasionally, the hands of a character seem bigger than their face. Scenes that feature the sorcery and trickery of Mahiravan do create a positive impact nevertheless.

Performances by the voice cast are good and that adds some weight to the narrative. The music though is jarring at times and the songs don’t add to the story telling process at all. ‘Hanuman vs Mahiravana’ is worth a watch but don’t go expecting anything that’s world class.
