Captain Amarinder Singh looks set to become the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief. After Singh held another round of meeting with Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Wednesday, party sources said it was just a matter of time before PCC chief Pratap Singh Bajwa is replaced with Singh. It will be a signal that the former CM will lead the Congress in the assembly polls scheduled for early 2017.

“During Rahulj’s consultations with Congress MLAs and party functionaries from Punjab, the overwhelming opinion was that Amarinderji would be the most suitable candidate to the lead the Congress in the assembly polls. Rahulji’s meetings with Captain sahib was to firm up larger details of the new team that will be in place soon, perhaps during or after Bihar elections,” a party functionary said.

Singh’s elevation would make him the de facto CM candidate but the high command is keen to accommodate other groups to maintain a equilibrium, sources said. AICC is exploring the possibility of appointing Ambika Soni or Rajinder Kaur Bhattal as chairman of poll campaign committee.
