There seems to be no respite from flooding in Chennai as rains lashed the Tamil Nadu capital Thursday night. The situation is expected to worsen with authorities deciding to release water from a lake outside Chennai.
There is imminent danger for those living in low lying areas of Chennai as 5000 cusecs water is set to be discharged from Chembarambakkam lake near the city. It is the largest lake outside Chennai and the discharge of water is likely to inundate the city.
The lake was let open last week as well following heavy rain, and it contributed to flooding in the Tamil Nadu capital.
Meanwhile, focus in Tamil Nadu has is now also on relief operations, and currently, as many as 50,000 people are residing in relief camps.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Navy and Air Force have been carrying out rescue operations since Tuesday and distributing food and water packets to marooned people.
With Chennai and other parts of the state remaining water logged, authorities are using boats to reach out to people.
