Tutak Tutak Tutiya is a story of Krishna, an executive working in Mumbai, and his ambition in life is to marry an ultra modern girl.
He might have eight films to his credit in the Tamil film industry, but director Vijay still feels the jitters as his Hindi debut, ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’, gears up for release. “The film is a trilingual, and marks my debut in both Hindi and Telugu film industries. A horror drama, it depicts the love story of a husband and wife. I hope people connect with it and our hard work pays off,” he says. In a chat with BT, Vijay also gets candid about his Bollywood experiences and why he would probably never make a trilingual again!
You’ve worked with big stars in the South and have some entertaining films to your credit. What prompted you to test waters in Bollywood?
I’m no stranger to Bollywood. I started out as an assistant to Priyadarshan, and have worked with him on films like ‘Yeh Teraa Ghar Yeh Meraa Ghar’, ‘Hungama’ and ‘Malamaal Weekly’. I’ve been looking for the right opportunity to debut here, and this film seemed perfect.
Was language a barrier?
I believe there’s just one language when it comes to this visual medium — film language. My sensibilities were clear and so, executing the film in Hindi was not difficult. This is my baby step in Bollywood, and I’d love to make more movies here.
But shooting in three languages must have been a task…
We’d done meticulous planning and I spent eight months on pre-production alone. We shot each scene thrice and completed filming in about 54 days. Though the story is the same, we had a different supporting cast in each version. Also, from the introduction to climax, each version has been treated differently. But I almost went crazy during the post-production phase. We spent many sleepless nights because we were editing the film to present it in such a way that it clicks with the audience in all the three languages. I’ve now decided that I’ll never do a trilingual again; I can still manage bilinguals!
Behind-the-scene trivias
worked together before, Sonu, Prabhudheva and Tamannaah had a strong bonding during the making of this film.
Sonu and Prabhudheva would tease Tamannaah saying she is from a different planet because of her flawless complexion.
The house they shot in was rumoured to be haunted, reveals associate producer Ajay Dhama. So much so, many unit members would be overcome with anxiety and nervousness while shooting late nights.
Being thick friends, Sonu and Prabhudheva would call each other up at odd hours if struck by a funny idea. And they would improvise it on the set the next day.
Prabhudheva made Sonu rehearse the dance steps for days before shooting the songs.
Sonu didn’t want to go bare-body in this film. However, at director Vijay’s behest, he shed his shirt for the song Love The Way You Dance and flaunted his six-pack abs.
Since the film is made in three languages — Hindi, Tamil and Telugu — they’d shoot every scene thrice. The Tamil and Telugu versions have character artistes from the respective film industries.
Vijay was sceptical if Prabhudheva would play the lead in a heroine-oriented film, especially since he was making a comeback of sorts as a hero in the South after a long time. But the dancing star coolly asked, “When Rajini sir can do ‘Chandramukhi’, why can’t I do this?’
The team wanted the first look of the film to be a dance number because the audience would see Prabhudheva doing full-fledged numbers after a long time.
One of the biggest challenges was to showcase Tamannaah as a village belle. Vijay says, “She has such a strong, modern personality that we were worried if she could pass off as a villager. But she fit the mould really well.”
The film has been shot in Satara, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.
Producers’ Notes
Sonu Sood
I came to this city to entertain. Having done that as an actor, I’m looking forward to entertaining cinegoers as a producer with ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’. When I heard the script, I liked it so much that I decided to produce it. Working with friends like Prabhudheva and Tamannaah made it simpler. For a first time producer, I’m happy with the way it has shaped up and the response to our songs and trailers have strengthened our belief that we are on the right track. I’m also glad to have Vashuji on board. Having been in the industry for long, he knows commercial cinema and his experience in marketing and distributing the film has been very valuable.
Vashu Bhagnani
From the time I heard about the subject, I’ve been upbeat about ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’. While Sonu has worked hard on the making of the film and the songs, the response to the trailer and the songs has further boosted our confidence. Prabhudheva, who’s a fantastic dancer-choreographer and has excellent comic timing, has also spared no effort in promoting the film all over. While one or two hit songs are enough for a film, we have four. Moreover, I feel we are blessed to have three-week window before the Diwali releases.
‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’, presented by Pooja Entertainment Films Ltd and produced by Shakti Sagar Productions, releases today.
