Navjot Singh Sidhu joins Congress
India’s flamboyant politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today joined main opposition party Congress ahead of fresh elections to Punjab state legislature next month.
Sidhu, 58, a former cricketer and TV commentator, was inducted in Congress after a meeting with party Vice President Rahul Gandhi who welcomed him into the party.
Sidhu had quit ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in September 2016, alleging complaining that he had been sidelined.
Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur has already been field nomination paper as a Çongress candidate in Punjab polls which will be held on February 4.
When Sidhu quit BJP in September 2016, he had at that time alleged that he was forced to surrender his parliamentary seat of Amritsar to make way for Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who eventually lost the constituency in 2014 general elections.
Two months later, Sidhu quit BJP and his wife joined Congress.
