Reports say the aircraft was carrying mainly Russian tourists and was traveling from the Egyptian resort city of Sharm al-Sheikh to Russia.
A report by Sky News Arabia initially said that the aircraft had crashed.
Security sources in Sinai Peninsula confirmed reports that an aircraft had gone missing, without clarifying whether they were referring to the same plane, Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, Ayman al-Muqaddam, the head of the central air traffic accident authority in Egypt, has said that the plane has “safely passed” Egyptian airspace.
“The… Russian airline had told us that the Russian plane we lost contact with is safe and that it has contacted Turkish air traffic control and is passing through Turkish skies now,” he said.
That statement is yet to be confirmed by Russian officials.
A source in the Russian airline regulator has told RIA Novosti that the plane vanished from radars.
