Nirbhaya’s parents stage protest at Rajghat

Nirbhaya

Remembering their daughter on her death anniversary, Nirbhaya’s parents staged a silent protest at Rajghat on Tuesday while demanding the setting up of fast track courts for heinous crimes.

They said they had put forth four demands before the government, noting that only one demand — the juvenile Bill — has been fulfilled.

“We are now seeking fast track courts in the country to provide justice to victims of heinous crimes. Punishment should be meted out to rapists at the earliest and they should be executed for the rarest of rare crimes,” Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath told The Hindu .

The Supreme Court has stayed the death sentence of the four convicts twice — on March 15, 2014 and July 14, 2014. The Apex court is yet to hand down its decision.

Her parents are also demanding he setting up of a Nirbhaya forensics lab with the help of the government’s Nirbhaya fund.

“There is no proper forensics lab in India. This delays and denies justice to the victims,” said Mr. Badrinath.

Speaking about his family’s personal struggle, he added: “We simply cannot give up. We owe it to the daughters of the country to try our best to do everything in our power to ensure that they are safe. This will be the best tribute to my daughter. Her death should not go in vain. As her parents, we will never give up fighting for every single daughter of the country. It is our moral and spiritual duty. It is the purpose of our life now.”
