Make In India Award Winner Engineer Abhinav Verma Arrested

In 2015, Abhinav Verma became famous after Narendra Modi praised his invention at Indian Science Congress. One year later again his name became famous but for all the wrong things. He was arrested on Thursday for printing fake Rs 2000 notes worth Rs 42 lakh in Punjab.

Punjab police in Mohali and Chandigarh arrested him along with his cousin Vishakha Verma and Ludhiana-based property dealer Suman Nagpal. They were cheating by exchanging the demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for fake Rs 2000 notes. Not only that, the trio was also charging 30 percent commission for the exchange.

Parminder Singh Bhandal, Mohali Superintendent of Police said the fake notes were recovered on Wednesday from a brand new luxury Audi SUV. The car also had a red beacon which allowed only for the VVIPs. He averred, “The notes are of fine quality and look exactly like the new notes of Rs 2,000.”

Two more members of the gang ran away, police conducted raids to arrest them.

Abhinav and Vishakha printed the fake currency, while the property dealer was responsible for finding clients who wanted to convert their unaccounted money to the new currency.

An investigating officer said that all the seized notes had the same serial numbers.

Last year Abhinav, the engineering graduate has developed ‘Live Braille’, a wearable device which claimed to help visually challenged people to walk around without the need of a walking stick. The devise has two ultra-sonic range finders which could detect obstacles in the path of movement and vibrate.

It was a great success for him and his device was commercially launched as an innovation under the “Make in India” programme this year. It is sold in India and more than 15 other countries.

At the 102nd Indian Science Congress in 2015, he said it was his dream to provide affordable and reliable walking aids to the visually impaired. Abhinav called his device a ‘freedom device’. He also launched a fund-raising initiative called Milaap for the campaign.

The device won many awards at major engineering institutes in the country and at Illinois State University. It also won the TiEGER Award by TiE Silicon Valley USA.

Last year, Narendra Modi mentioned him at the Indian Science Congress in Bengaluru.
