She’s young, independent and beautiful than ever. Meet the pretty Indian bride, who resides in each one of us and has come of age in every sense of the word. Gone are the days, when she used to run to the neighbouring parlour wali aunty to book a slot for her D-day and chose a used lipstick for herself from the dingy vanity case. The new Indian dulhan is so liberated that she won’t even use that surma from Pakistan a day beyond its expiry date, so you can definitely not expect her to rely on the shady aunty anymore. She has her own bridal makeup artist at her service on her big day, making sure, she shines amid those thousands of bulbs in the ballroom and turns all the pretty ladies present in the room green with envy.
So, what makes the Indian bride so novel? Well, in our quest to unravel the new face of the gorgeous bride-to-be, we got in touch with two of the country’s leading bridal makeup artists to find out what’s new in the game of bridal makeup. Here’s a look what they had to say:
According to Urvashi Bhardwaj, of U. MakeUp & Hair by Urvashi, one of India’s leading bridal makeup artists, who has a tough time turning down prospective clients, thanks to her busy schedule diary, the 1960’s look has struck a chord with the new age bride.
“That perfect winged eyeliner makes those eyes bewitching. Glitter is out, matte in! Let that glitter shine only on your body not the face. Visibly simple, but secretly not. Brides also seem to be taken in by the no-makeup makeup look. In simple terms, it’s makeup that is supposed to make one look naturally beautiful,” claims Urvashi.
Urvashi has a few tips to give to the would-be-brides. “To look good on her wedding is every bride’s dream and it can be easily achieved with the right type of makeup, easy/comfortable, yet classy clothing and a relaxed body and mind. Take that pressure off by booking your favourite makeup artist well in advance (say 4-6 months before your wedding day). Word of mouth, reviews online and offline will help you pick the best. Even if you don’t have months to prepare for your wedding, instead of fretting just get your best friend or sister to do the research and talking with the makeup artist! Discussing your preferred look with the makeup artist will help them come prepared to make you look like a damsel,” adds Urvashi, who’s a hit with the new-age brides.
As per Urvashi, 5 things that a bride needs to do stand out from the crowd are:
1. Exquisite eye makeup
2. Highlighting the best features on her face
3. Camouflaging any flaws on the face with the right type of makeup and technique
4. Giving prior advice to the bride on the type of jewellery they should get that will add to their beauty instead of being the highlight on her face and taking attention away from it
5. And most importantly, ensuring she feels like a diva. When she feels it, she looks it! Talking her into feeling like the most beautiful girl on her day makes her walk tall in the crowd.
Gunjan Gaur, one of India’s best permanent makeup experts and Executive Director of ALPS Beauty Clinics & Academies feels the bride is always expected to look beautiful on her wedding day. and this age of digital photography demands a makeup which is not only appealing, but also high-definition.
“Airbrush makeup is one of the things to opt for while going for a bridal makeup. The best choice for bridal makeup has to be sweat-proof, smudge-free, long-lasting and capable of hiding the minutest of flaws on skin. In fact, bridal airbrush makeup enhances the bride’s best features to make her look no less than a celebrity bride. A base matching your skin tone should be preferred. However, it should be light enough not to flaunt the skin-pores through HD waves of camera,” suggests Gunjan.
“A matte base with ample bronzing is also preferred this season. One can use a high-shine bronzer on the top of cheekbones; also it will shed three pounds from the face and make it appear natural too. While doing eye and lip makeup, a bold look should be preferred. Therefore, a winged liner remains a favourite. Gold is the king these days with smoky apply on edges of the eyes enhancing the beauty of the bride. It can be complimented with red colour on lips, nails and even artificial red roses on hair. So, go as much as red and gold as you can, it is definitely a trend. Moreover, artificial lashes with and without studs are also being used to make the lashes seem thicker and intense. For lips, one can go for a fiery red or tomato red,” adds Gunjan.
So, what look are you going to opt for on your D-day?
