Deportation drama over: Orlando Bloom now visits Taj with Amar Singh

British actor Orlando Bloom was on Sunday deported to the UK soon after his arrival here as his e-visa had been rejected, following which external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj came to his help to get a visa. The 38-year-old actor was invited by the Uttar Pradesh government for a state event.

Bloom, who arrived in New Delhi from London at 1.30 am on Saturday by a British Airways Flight, was told upon his arrival that his e-visa had been rejected. Subsequently, he was deported by the 4 am British Airways flight, sources said.

Following this, former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh spoke to Swaraj seeking her intervention in the matter, they said. “The minister asked the foreign secretary to speak to the Indian High Commissioner in London to issue a Tatkal (urgent) visa to the British actor so that he could attend the state function,” sources said.

Following the direction, the actor, known for his role as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, was granted a visa. Asked about the confusion surrounding his deportation, Bloom brushed it aside as a simple “misunderstanding”.

The actor, who visited the Taj Mahal with Amar Singh, said he cherished his experience at Taj and that “it was amazing”. Bloom was in India as a state guest to promote tourism and was extended an invitation by Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, Amar Singh said.
