Terrorist Attack Pathankot High Alert

Following the terror attacks in Hiranagar and Samba areas of Jammu and Kashmir, the adjoining Punjab town of Pathankot was put on high alert on Thursday. Personnel of the police and armed forces stepped up vigil. The local police sealed the state border with J&K at Madhopur and Kathlore Pattan.

Rail traffic was suspended for several hours, while road transport was also hit as passengers were asked to vacate buses heading toward J&K at Sarna and Madhopur. Truckers were seen stranded on the roadside at Madhopur near Lakhanpur(J&K).

As the news of the terror attacks reached here, the police intensified checking of vehicles coming from the J&K side. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP, rural) Manoj Kumar told HT that cops in large numbers was keeping an eye on all points linking Punjab with J&K, adding that the forces were also put on high alert in the Bamyal sector, where a stretch of nearly 13 km is yet to be fenced.

He said security had also been beefed up at the railway station, bus stands and religious places.

Meanwhile, the easy availability of the army uniform at shops in the town has raised many an eyebrow. The terrorists involved in Thursday’s attacks were also attired in an army outfit.

When contacted, army spokesperson Naresh Vig said it was illegal for a civilian to purchase the army uniform from these shops.
