Another Ukraine in the making? Hundreds of anti-govt protesters block main street in Moldova

Another Ukraine in the making

Hundreds of pro-Russian protesters blocked the main street in the Moldovan capital during the morning rush hour, demanding the resignation of the government.

Some 400 protesters led by the leader of the pro-Moscow Our Party, Renato Usatii, parked dozens of cars on the Stephen the Great Boulevard before dawn Monday, bringing traffic to a halt.

The protest ended after more than two hours following discussions with police and city authorities.

Protests began in Moldova on 6 September when tens of thousands staged demonstrations, demanding a probe into up to $1.5 billion that went missing from three Moldovan banks before the 2014 November parliamentary elections.

Since then, protesters have erected tents in a pedestrian square and staged weekend protests.

The government has promised to investigate the missing money.
