17-yr-old IIT aspirant ends life in Kota despite clearing exam

A 17-year-old IIT aspirant from Ghaziabad ended her life by jumping from the fifth floor of her apartment building in Kota on Thursday despite clearing JEE (Mains), the results of which were announced a day earlier, taking the total number of stress-related suicides this year by co aching students in the educational hub to five.

In her suicide note, the girl, Kriti Tripathi, said she was taking the extreme step as she was not satisfied with the results.

“Kriti has implied in the note that she didn’t want to pursue engineering, but Ba chelor of Science (BSc). She wanted to become an astrophysicist. It’s strange because one can also become an astrophysicist after graduating from an IIT,” said SHO of Jawahar Nagar police station Harshit Bharati, who is investigating the case.

In her suicide note, writ ten in English, Kriti apologised to her parents.

The girl’s class XII results are yet to be announced. “However, her JEE (Mains) results came out on Wednesday .Though the cut-off marks were 100, she scored 144. As per the coaching officials, it was a decent score and she had a good chance of cracking IIT,” the SHO said.

Bharati said Kriti had moved to Kota two years ago and was staying in the apartment in Ashirwad Angan near Om Tower. “The girl took admission in a senior secondary school. She joined a coaching institute to prepare for IIT simultaneously ,” said the SHO, adding that her father, Anshuman Tripathi, runs a travel agency . Kriti’s parents made an arrangement that one of them would stay with her always. “When she took the extreme step on Thursday , her father was in Kota while the mother was in Ghaziabad,” Bharati said.

The SHO said Kriti’s father had gone to the gym around 8.30 am when he received a call from his wife.”Some neighbours had called up his wife, telling her that a girl had jumped from the fifth floor of the apartment building and she should check if it was Kriti. On receiving the call from his wife, Anshuman rushed to the spot and identified the girl as his daughter,” the SHO said.

Neighbours told the police that the girl used to keep to herself. “The neighbours told us that she rarely ventured out, except for going to the coaching classes, and was always seen busy with her studies,” Bharati said.

The police have handed over the body to family members after a post-mortem examination.
