Ten people were killed and at least 15 others injured when a rashly driven private bus rammed into a “gharuka” (motorised cart) on Mehta-Amritsar road near Chogawan village here on Wednesday evening.
All deceased–six women, three men and a seven-year-old-girl–were travelling in the “gharuka”.
Police said a total of 25 people were travelling in the ‘gharuka’. The speeding bus was on its way from Amritsar to Sri Hargobindpur. The collision resulted in the on-the-spot death of nine people.
The injured, which included those from the bus as well, were rushed to hospitals in Amritsar. Later, one person succumbed to injuries in hospital.
The driver of the bus, which belonged to Sachdeva bus company, fled the spot. Irate locals set the bus on fire after asking the passengers to alight. Police were yet to identify the deceased, while no case was registered till the filing of the report.
Amritsar rural SSP Jasdeep Singh said efforts were on to identify the deceased. He said a case would be registered after thoroughly investigating the matter.
