Complaints Against Police Keeping Helpline Busy

Some Delhi police personnel have been notorious for corrupt practices apart from their nexus with criminals, observers say.

The alarming figures of the vigilance department appear to back the tainted picture of a few department men.

According to data shared by Delhi Police on Thursday, as many as 497 calls were made in 2017 on the anti-corruption helpline complaining about corruption by cops. The number of such calls in 2016 was only 116.

“Out of 497 calls, 283 were of inaction, 143 were related to corruption and 71 to miscellaneous issues,” a Delhi Police official said, adding that these complaints were also inquired into with necessary follow-up action.

In 2017, as many as 367 vigilance inquiries were conducted and allegations in 65 cases were proved against 158 police officials.

These include one DCP, 46 inspectors, 43 sub-inspectors, 27 assistant sub-inspectors, 20 head constables and 21 constables. Departmental actions are also taken by the vigilance unit.

Around 585 police personnel were placed under suspension for various commissions and omissions, including one ACP, 11 inspectors, 81 sub-inspectors, 127 ASIs, 122 head constables and 243 constables.

Also, 299 police personnel were awarded major punishments, including 59 dismissals. Another 1,782 personnel were censured.
